Alternative Energy Management, LLC (AEM, LLC )… Identifies, Evaluates & Implements custom designed energy conservation power management and efficient lighting systems engineered to perform in any environment while providing cost effective solutions reducing a facilities consumption of energy and carbon footprint.

  • Energy Assessments

A qualitative audit is conducted to determine the feasibility of an Alternative Energy Savings Solution (AESS) project.  Organizations interested in an energy audit will complete a short survey and submit all energy bills for the most recent 24 consecutive months or sign a release form allowing AEM, LLC to collect all the energy bills for the organization.  First AEM, LLC  makes a study to find out just what the electrical loads are in the facility (e.g., appliance systems, lighting level, quality and conditions, HVAC and heating equipment, electric motors, water heaters, emergency systems, and how they were operated). Secondly, the study defines existing working conditions and actual usage of peak and off peak equipment loads. These findings are evaluated and then are reflected in the proposed specifications of the design report prepared for the customer.  Upon acceptance of the proposed solution, AEM, LLC implements, monitors and maintains the proposed recommendations.

  • Implement & Maintenance
The first step in creating a lighting solution for a customer is to comprehend what priorities they have in mind. This can result in a retrofit that has an emphasis on aesthetics and light design or a solution that maximizes energy savings or a combination of both. Getting a sense of these needs up front allows us to adapt the final design to better suit the customer's own objectives and informs us of what to concentrate on to build a successful solution.  AEM, LLC team will conduct a lighting and energy inspection to better understand the existing fixtures as well as the goals of the customer.

The next step in the process is a detailed audit. AEM, LLC conducts a facility-wide lighting system assessment where we inspect all areas of the building, taking into account specific lighting needs for the various parts of the customer's facility. We compile information including fixture quantities, light level readings, lamp and ballast specifications and hours of operation among other items. This gives AEM, LLC a comprehensive picture of the current lighting configuration and provides data to determine where efficiency opportunities exist as well as where overall lighting quality can be enhanced.

We then come up with a cost effective design that is built around the objectives of the customer.  AEM, LLC  uses lighting measuring devices to design a solution that insures proper light levels are achieved while maximizing the efficiencies available. AEM, LLC works with the customer to determine the best schedule to implement the solution that does not interfere with the customer's business operations. Finally, we implement the solution, overseeing the project through completion to guarantee a smooth completion of the retrofit.

A customized System takes the mystery out of making your facility more efficient by forecasting usage, cost, and emissions savings that can be created by implementing various efficiency improvements.
  • Power Energy Management Solution (PEMS)
A solution that provides a centralized interface to monitor, manage and automate the power utilization of all systems in a facility. The solution provides the flexibility to account for business and IT specific activities so as to not hinder business performance. Although cost will certainly play a role in choosing a solution, this should be balanced against the cost savings expected to be achieved once the product is implemented. In most cases, a power management solution will provide rapid and justifiable return on investment (ROI).  Products used to manage and monitor power utilization within a facility include:
  1. Energy ExpertTM--tracks energy cost / savings – daily and generates reports. Single or multiple buildings, accessible from any computer, meets Gov’t EPACT 2005 monitoring requirements, preventive maintenance, & vendor Mgmt.
  2. DegreeGuardTM--Protect food inventory, automates temperature recording, improves equipment performance, reduces energy cost, HACCP Compliant, Warns of equipment failure, easy installation.
  3. Wireless Monitoring--no hardware, Alarms, Service Calls, Remedial Actions, monitoring HVAC, Motors, Energy usage, Tank inventory, Steam Distribution Sys, UPS Battery System, Environmental, Municipal water, & Homeland Defense usage.

  • Rebate evaluation & assistance

Many Electric and Gas Utilities have programs for their commercial and industrial customers that provide incentive rebates for the implementation of qualifying energy saving projects. While these programs are extremely helpful in encouraging their customers to upgrade their systems to more efficient solutions, each utility has different rules and qualification methods that need to be followed to guarantee that the projects implemented will receive rebates.  AEM, LLC and its business partners work closely with the Utilities companies to provide the required services to bring these incentives to our customers.  Examples of programs in place that customers can take advantage of:

  • Energy Star Programs-- Features of ENERGY STAR qualified new homes include: Effective Insulation. High-Performance Windows, Tight Construction and Tight Ducts Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling Equipment;
  • Nat’l Industrial Technology Programs (ex. VA, = large Commercial customers & homes.) Energy savings list and procedures, working with DOE, BUT no Cash Rebates.
  • Solar, Clean Coal , Nat’l Biofuels initiatives
  • Federal Tax Benefit Qualification--The Energy Policy Act of 2005 set a precedent by containing a market changing  incentive in the form of a tax deduction for owner's  investments in their commercial building's energy efficiency. The deduction is equal to energy-efficiency commercial building property expenditures made by the taxpayer, subject to a cap. The deduction is limited to an amount equal to $1.80 per square foot of the property for which such expenditures are made, in the year which the property is placed in service. For tax purposes, "placed in services" generally means the time at which the property is ready for intended use.

Certain certification requirements must be met in order to qualify for the deduction, and restrictions on the per square foot deduction include that the efficiency upgrades be part of the interior lighting systems, heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water systems or the building envelope itself.

The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 was passed by Congress as part of the $700 Billion financial bailout plan. For a complete summary of the bill see:
http://www.finance.senate.gov/sitepages/leg/LEG%202008/091708%20Staff%20Summary%20of%20the%20Energy%20Improvement%20and%20Extension%20Act.pdf.  Here is the summary of the provision which could potentially benefit homeowners:

§ 302 Extension & Modification of Credit for Energy-Efficiency Improvements to Existing Homes:

The bill extends the tax credit for energy-efficient existing homes for 2009 under Section 25C, and includes energy-efficient biomass fuel stoves as a new class of energy efficient property eligible for a consumer tax credit of $300. The proposal also clarifies the efficiency standard for water heaters. AUDIENCE: Consumers – Residential Homeowners

See IRS form 5695 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5695.pdf . Taxpayers should consult their tax professional or accountant for how the PowerwoRx e3 can qualify for the Tax Credit and how much of the purchase price and installation costs apply.

Neither AEM, LLC nor EcoTrust Energy make any claims regarding an individual’s ability to receive a tax credit.

  • LEED Certification Assistance
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED certified buildings consume resources more efficiently as compared to conventional buildings which are simply built to code. LEED certified buildings end up as healthier working and living environments, which contributes to higher productivity and improved employee health and comfort.  The USGBC has also compiled a long list of benefits of implementing a LEED strategy which ranges from improving air and water quality to reducing solid waste. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in five areas:
  • Sustainable site development
  • Water savings
  • Energy efficiency
  • Materials and resources selection
  • Indoor environmental quality

Different versions of the rating system are available for specific project types:

  • New Construction
  • Existing Buildings
  • Commercial Interiors
  • Core and Shell
  • Homes
  • Neighborhood Development
  • Schools
  • Retail

There are four rating levels based on a point system. The levels from lowest to highest include:

  • Certified
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum

The fundamental reduction in environmental impacts in addition to all of the economic and occupant benefits goes a long way for making a case for green building. It is also important to note that these benefits are reaped by anyone who comes into contact with the project which includes owners, occupants and society as a whole.   AEM, LLC can assist in the attainment of LEED certification through our products and services.  We have access to LEED specialists through our business partners as well.
